Continuous Activity: Discussion on Clinical Supervision Material (CE – Continuous Activity) CoordinatorsGeneral Coordinator – Cláudio Laks Eizirik Assistant Coordinators – Antonio Carlos Jardim Pires Rogério Wolf de Aguiar Executive Coordinator – Patrícia Fabrício Lago Activity TitleExtension Course Continuous Activity: discussion on clinical supervision material Period of activity: March to December 2008 ObjectivesGeneral Promote the study of the Supervision for Analytic Psychotherapy Supervision technique through systematic discussion of clinical supervision material. Specific To promote and enable a better qualification for professionals who work as analytic psychotherapy supervisors in order for them to:
JustificationThe training of analytic psychotherapist is inspired in the psychoanalytic training model, the classical triad: theoretical seminaries, personal analysis and supervision of clinical cases. Therefore, the supervision plays a fundamental role in the training of psychotherapists and in preserving and conveying knowledge on psychotherapeutic theory and technique. Many authors have already highlighted the importance of supervision in the teaching-learning process both of psychoanalytic technique and analytic psychotherapy technique: Fleming and Benedeck, Grinberg, Solnit, Gaoni, Neumann, Eizirik, Szecsödy, Mabilde, Soares, Vollmer e Bernardi, Brito, Zaslavsky.¹ Cataldo Neto et al² observed that 88.5% of trained psychiatrists, in two decades, in the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) have or had supervision during an average of six years, evidencing the importance of supervision in training and developing psychotherapeutic abilities. Although, since 1920, supervision is formally integrated in analytic training, it is worth noticing that it has been exercised, both in our milieu and internationally, often intuitively or as the fruit of a vicarious learning. Indeed, this is the rule in relation to the exercise of supervision – traditionally it is supervising and being supervised that one learns how to supervise. However, even in face of the scarcity of specific literature, there are already studies about theory, technique and vicissitudes of supervision. The complexity of the supervision process has been, thus, progressively evidenced, motivating continuous study and improvement of this tool. Among us, various colleagues have been devoting themselves to study the theme and to produce scientific papers on it. Currently periodicals, theses, study groups and, more recently, a course on supervision are being undertaken. Since 2004, originating from a pioneering initiative by CELG and the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine of Famed/UFRGS, the Extension Course Theory and Technique of Supervision of Analytic Psychotherapy, this year, is in its fourth edition, functioning regularly. In this period, nearly 50 students had access to a structured training, enabling supervision to be performed in a more theoretically founded and technically consistent manner. However, taking into consideration that the Extension Course Theory and Technique of Supervision of Analytic Psychotherapy has a limited duration of 8 months, the idea is providing former students of the Supervision Course with the possibility of complementing the technical instruments offered in the course through systematic discussion on clinical supervision material. Thus, in response to the demand of the students for opportunities to follow up with the supervision study, a group of former students will meet once a month with a teacher – one of the instructors of the Supervision Course – for two hours of formal discussion on clinical supervision material brought by the students. Such a configuration will permit detailed discussions on the characteristics of the supervision setting, a study on the supervisor’s interventions, the supervisee’s assessment and the supervising process, as well as examining the approach and direction of difficult situations. Besides that, as encounters occur in the context of a small group, previously selected and with specific training, aspects related to ethics and secrecy are favored. It is believed that such an initiative may contribute to an even higher improvement for professionals acting in this area. Besides that, it permits valuing and diffusing differential knowledge in this specific area of colleagues in our milieu. On the other hand, CELG, as a teaching institution, gains with one more highly qualified product. 1. ZASLAVSKY, J., NUNES, M.L.T. e EIZIRIK, C.L.
