Supervision in Analytic Therapy – Theory and Technique

Enrollments open for the VII Curso de Extensão Teoria e Técnica da Supervisão de Psicoterapia de Orientação Analítica (7th Extension Course on Analytic Psychotherapy Supervision – Theory and Technique), with a revised and extended program. The seminars will occur from April to November, on Wednesdays at night, 19:00 to 22:00, at CELG. The activities start with a collective supervision on supervision clinical material, followed by a theoretical seminar and a clinical seminar: discussion of supervision clinical material presented by the students.

The course is coordinated by Cláudio Laks Eizirik, Antonio Carlos Jardim Pires, Rogério Wolf de Aguiar e Patrícia Fabrício Lago. The course also counts, in its teaching staff, with Germano Vollmer Filho, Isaac Pechansky, Luiz Carlos Mabilde, Romualdo Romanowski e Sidnei Schestatsky. Enrollments for the next year are open.

  • Sidnei Schestatsky

Objectives

General

Promote the study of theory and technique of Supervision in Analytic Psychotherapy (CAP)
Specific

Provide professionals acting as AP supervisors with qualification in order for them to:

  • Establish an adequate professional link with the supervisee;
  • Establish an adequate framework for supervision;
  • Perform the multiple functions of the supervisor, understanding the complexity of the supervisory field;
  • Grasp the cognitive-affective and ethical aspects of the supervision process;
  • Know the models and phases of supervision;
  • Evaluate the supervisee and the evolution of the supervision process;
  • Identify and handle the vicissitudes and problems arising in supervision.

Justification

The supervision is the most important teaching instrument in the development of an analytic psychotherapist. It is by its means that the integration of theoretical and technical knowledge and the introjection of a work model occur, framing professional identity.

However, despite the complexity of the process, it has been performed intuitively or as the fruit of a vicarious learning – traditionally it is supervising and being supervised that one learns how to supervise.

It is worth mentioning that, even in face of the scarcity of specific literature, there are important studies about theory, technique and vicissitudes of supervision; the complexity of the supervision process has been, thus, progressively evidenced. Many authors have highlighted the importance of the supervision in the teaching-learning process both of psychoanalytic technique and theory: Fleming and Benedeck, Grinberg, Solnit, Gaoni, Neumann, Eizirik1, Szecsödy, Mabilde, Soares, Vollmer e Bernardi, Brito, Zaslavsky2. Cataldo Neto 3 has observed that 88.5% of psychiatrists graduated, in two decades, in the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) have or had supervision during an average of six years, evidencing the importance of supervision in training and developing psychotherapeutic abilities.

Therefore, considering the importance of supervision, the lack of literature and the inexistence of training courses for supervisors and, yet, the knowledge acquired on the subject in our milieu, the idea is enabling the access to a structured training in order to provide instruments for handling this crucial tool in the development of a psychotherapist. The objective is providing theoretical basis and technical consistency for the conduction of the supervision.

Thus, aiming at fulfilling a gap for many years observed in this area, the Department of Psychiatry and Forensic Medicine of FAMED / UFRGS and Centro de Estudos Luis Guedes promote, since 2004, on a yearly basis, a course on Supervision in Analytic Therapy – Theory and Technique. It is considered that such an initiative – pioneering, not only in Brazil, since there seems to be only one course on supervision in the world, in Europe – will contribute for a bigger qualification of professionals acting in this area.
