Centro de Estudos Luis Guedes (CELG) and the Psychiatry and the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Medicine School of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) promote the 4th Extension Course in Psychoanalytic Theories of Character. Organized in 18 theoretical seminars with clinical exempla, across 4 months. The character of any individual is formed by a series of factors, many of them directly connected to primitive conflicts, good and/or traumatic experiences and is the result of the way each one dealt with these conflicts in face of internal and external reality. This is true for all our patients, all the people, and for us therapists. In any psychotherapy, in any psychiatric intervention, these factors are in action and therefore they are so important in this study. Regulation
Target populationPsychiatrists and Psychologists (students or professionals). ObjectivesTo develop the interest of psychotherapists to identify, since the evaluation period and psychotherapy onset, the main character traits of the patient, seeking to comprehend how and why they are formed (the history of each person, environmental, internal and constitutional factors). This comprehension effort will provide a good onset for the treatment, a bigger clarity of transference and countertransferential phenomena, main defenses and resistances to the therapeutic process. If the offered psychotherapy is focal or has a limited time span, the knowledge and the adequate handling of aspects related to character will facilitate the access to the focus (or the foci) chosen as urgency point, both by the patient and by the therapist. Even in the treatments in which the approach is mostly pharmacological, it is known that one important factor for the patient’s adherence to treatment and therapeutic response is the type of character, in other words, the character traits of the patient being attended.
