Dr. Darrel Regier – Director of the Division of Research of the American Psychiatric Association; vice-chair of the DSM-V task force Dr. Regier has recently completed 25 years in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). During this period, he coordinated the divisions of epidemiology, prevention, clinical research, and health services research. Dr. Regier initiated the development of several research fields, including national surveys on the prevalence of mental disorders – among which, the pioneering Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study – and the organization and financing of mental health services in primary care. Abroad, he remains the consultant of the World Health Organization for mental health initiatives. His presence in Brazil occurs in the moment in which the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders of the APA is being concluded.
Currently he is the Editor of the journal Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. He has published over 150 articles, book chapters and monographs.
Prof. Donald Patrick – Adjunct Professor of the School of Public Health at the University of Washington; Chair and Founder of the International Society for Quality of Life Research
Professor Donald Patrick stands out in the research field of quality of life and outcomes reported by patients. Director of the Center for Disability Policy and Research and the Seattle Quality of Life Group, both associated to the University of Washington, he has worked with assessment of health status and quality of life and its applications for sickness and disability, promotion of health and development of measures for specific conditions and populations. He is the author of more than 150 international publications in these fields, including community intervention and resource allocation for effective policies in health.
Prof. Dr. George Woody – Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, director of the Delaware Valley Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network
Professor Woody has 25 years of research focused in the field of chemical dependency and is a founding member and Life Fellow of the APA Board of Addiction Psychiatry. With over 150 published articles, his research involves the effectiveness of treatments for substance abuse.
Prof. Dr. Helen Herrman – Psychiatry professor at the Center for Youth Mental Health of the University of Melbourne
In her office at the APA, Helen Herrman assembled a task force for the development of guidelines for dealing with caretakers and service users. She is the leader of the support program for editors of psychiatry journals in low to medium income countries for the aid of research dissemination.
Her interests also include communitarian services for psychotic patients, depression management in primary care and evaluation of quality of life in disabled persons. Her curriculum presents over 100 high quality international publications in these fields.
Prof. Dr. Mark Solms – Professor of the Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town and director of the Arnold Pfeffer Center for Neuro-Psychoanalysis of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute
Throughout the years, Professor Solms has been developing a method for linking psychoanalytic clinical findings and the knowledge produced in neurosciences. One of the founders of the neuro-psychoanalysis, he has just received the prestigious Sigorney Award, conferred by the Sigorney Trust for his significant contributions to psychoanalytic clinic and research.
